A Different Possibility

Just the other day I spoke with Kit who had caught Covid and had some miserable symptoms, including horrible headaches and extreme fatigue.  About 2 weeks into it, she began a well planned nutritional supplement program and within days began to feel better.  Her body was craving help and she finally got it!  From that point on she recovered fast and now is back to work.
Today we are in the middle of serious pandemic, sequestered at home with minimal choices of places to go, stressed from businesses failing or with severe cuts in income and high unemployment.  Just part of a perfect storm of major challenges, not to mention the addition of an all consuming protest movement.  People are fearful and many are feeling helpless/powerless?  People are afraid of losing their jobs and homes and then, even more frightening, their lives. We are constantly told that we must wait months for therapeutic drugs and vaccines to counter this growing viral pandemic.

  • What if we thought about this situation differently?
  • What if people realized that they might be stuck in the paradigm that “sick care” is their “health care”?
  • What if people realized that “well care” is an option that relies on their own body to do its own healing and that they could be the masters of how their bodies respond to outside forces?
  • What if people realized that they have could have control and power over the rising tide of Covid19 cases, at least for themselves and their families?

Can anyone show us how to completely prevent contracting Covid19?  Of course not.  Right now we are doing the best we can to minimize our exposure by washing our hands enough, using masks, doing social distancing and staying away from large crowds.

Today I am going to share 4 Essential Tips that can help almost anyone, just like Kit, minimize the effects of this and other viruses and bacterial infections plus help you and your families choose “well care” over “sick care”.  And, if you do get ill, how about bouncing back faster?

Imagine having the tools to protect you & your family because you built better health and strong, powerful immune system.

You know, Americans are in a love frenzy with foods – So many live to eat rather than eat to live.  Not that you can’t do both but many of us make choices called the S.A.D. diet or Standard American Diet. We are talking about addictive processed foods, sugary snacks, high fat meats and unlimited sodas.  Can you relate to that?  In addition, most industrialized farms have poured tons of toxic chemicals and sprays on their fruits and vegetables, adding more to our toxic body buildup.  Yuk!

We really are what we eat and that translates to either choosing wisely and building healthy cells or being overfed and undernourished with deficient food choices creating lower quality body parts.

What should one do?  I’m sure either your mother, grandmother or both told you what most of us already know – eat your fruits and veggies, minimize sugary products and get enough rest.  But is that enough?

A strong immune system and a healthy body require a bit more, especially during a pandemic, let alone the upcoming flu season.  Why not feel empowered with a new sense of control because you have  fed your physical body and your soul?

Here are my 4 Essential Tips to combat Covid19 and other flus and viruses:

    1. Additional supplements in your daily regimen. Add:
      1. vitamin C (at least 2000 split through the day),
      2. vitamin D3 shown to help your immunity,
      3. zinc lozenges to coat your throat and protect the virus from entering your lungs,
      4. turmeric, a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory (either self made tea with black pepper and fat or an extract supplement with black pepper in it)
    2. Work on your stress –
      1. deep breathing exercises,
      2. meditation, prayer,
      3. talking out your concerns with someone close who cares.
      4. for extra help to calm your nerves, add a complete B-Complex or Ashwaganda.
    3. Do some sort of movement daily to relieve tensions and get your blood circulating.
    4. Begin to be intentional about making healthier, fresher food choices. It’s amazing how eating better quality foods not only changes how you feel but helps you get off of addictive bad food habits.

How important is your health?  What if you took a look at these new ideas and got your body strong enough to fight its battles from the inside out and do its own healing.

I’ve been helping people with these ideas for over 30 years.  Experience counts.  I know you can do this even BEFORE you get sick.  Try it!  You may love it!!

Toxic Chemicals in Our World

Can you believe there may be between 25,000 & 80,000 (in 2014) chemicals created in labs that are now in our environment? Is this true? ChemicalSafetyFacts.org says there were only 8700 in 2014 because many of those 80,000+ include duplicates and chemicals no longer used.  Of those 8700, how many are toxic?  How are they affecting us? How many more since 2014? And importantly, how does it affect our household and kids?Every parent wants the best for their children. However, little do they know that the products used to protect them from sickness can often cause it. Did you know that there re high rates of are facing of asthma, birth defects, and cancer and scientists feel that toxic chemicals play a big part? Childhood cancer incidence rates have had a steady increase over from 1976 to 2016. This increase amounted to an average of 1 percent per year, or almost 60 percent increase over 41 years (NYS DOH). And children in special education programs increased 191% from 1977 to 1994 (GBPSR, 2000).

Dr. Phillip Landrigan of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City says, “Of the 3000 high production volume chemicals in use in this country today, only 43% have been even minimally tested.” While you may be wondering why this issue is becoming more prevalent, I will answer that with this. According to UNEP 2013, chemical sales globally have increased by a factor of around 25 in 1970 from $171 billion to $4.1 trillion. Also, we are replacing natural materials with chemicals, an estimated 96% of chemicals are used in manufacturing materials and products (ACC 2014).  Think about the potential effect of chemicals entering the body through the skin or as inhalants.

We can do preventive measures to help minimize the effects.  I have been using Shaklee environmental products for over 30 years. I feel safe using them in my home because of Shaklee’s commitment to not using hazardous chemicals. They see the importance of not using ammonia, acids, and so much more! Ask me for more information on what these toxic chemicals are causing in our health and risk levels.

I implore you to look beyond the brand to the label and see if you are putting your family at risk.

For a list of toxic chemicals to be aware of and for information on Shaklee’s non toxic home care and personal care products, go to pws.shaklee.com/joanlubar/ or text me at 503-698-9493.

Have a healthy, non-toxic and green day!!       Joan

My Philosophy

Greetings from Joan...

Health and wellness have a huge interest and passion of mine for most of my adult life. However, prior to discovering more natural approaches to health I was headed down a bad path… I had digestive problems, allergies, thyroid and female problems, was falling asleep at work and gaining weight. Need I say more? I was a MESS! I didn’t like this direction and wanted to find answers. I was very blessed to have my carpool companion introduce me to a neighbor who knew a lot about building health and shared a more natural approach to improving my health. To make a long story a little shorter… After 37 years I am in great shape and not asleep, chubby, and miserable!

I discovered early on, the best way to introduce others to this exciting world of wellness, was through the stories of other folks. The success that others found made a greater impact and was far more encouraging than all the technical and scientific information. The average person just wants to know “what works” … they want simple and direct solutions that will not give them bad “side effects.” Is that you?

Speaking of side effects… can you believe the drug commercial and the litany of “side effects” that they verbalize after their promotions for the products? We all know that drugs can be life saving, BUT often times people are taking drugs when simple, non-toxic answers are out there.

My goal is to share other possibilities and give you and your friends non-toxic, health building possibilities to reach more optimum healthy outcomes. Every Monday I will share someone’s story.

If you find these valuable, would you pay it forward by sharing these stories with a friend?

Thank you for taking the time to read this and may 2020 overflow with health and happiness for you and your loved ones.

Do You Have Blind Spots in Your Life?

I just ran across this old quiz that I thought would be fun to take.
What drives you?  “The very traits that  fuel you also create emotional blind spots: scenarios in which you’re least likely to attend to your own needs.”  WOW!  Are these traits sabotaging our self care?   Thank you Johathan Kaplan, PhD, author of “Urban Mindfulness: Cultivating Peace, Presence, and Purpose in the Middle of It All”.  Let me know who YOU are!

  1.  Pretend you have an unlimited budget and 2 weeks to kill.  What’s your ideal vacation?
    A.  Bucket list time!  Maybe a hike in Machu Picchu, maybe learn to surf in Hawaii.
    B. You’ve always wanted to try a voluntourism trip – maybe build a school in Guatemala or monitor sea turtle in Mexico.
    C. Enjoying a breathtaking sunset like on a picture perfect postcard on a white sandy beach
    D. You’d have everyone in your family weigh in: you are not that picky.
  2. You leave your sister-in-law an urgent message and two hours later she still hasn’t responded.  You think:
    A. Actually, you don’t think anything.  Between rushing to the gym and stopping at the grocery store, you forgot you even texted her.
    B. “I should call and make sure she’s okay.”
    C. “She must be tied up; she’ll buzz me later.”
    D. “I hope she’s not angry that I didn’t call her back yesterday.”
  3.  Which of the following are you most likely to post on Facebook?
    A. Photos from the weekend: the garden you are planting, the dinner party you hosted the new table you bought at a flea market, etc.
    B. An invitation for friends to join you at this week’s local blood drive.
    C. An inspirational quote.  You have been on an Anne Lamott kick lately.
    D. A survey for your friends:  Which movie should you see and where is the best place to eat afterwards.
  4. Your friends and family can rely on you to:
    A. Brainstorm solutions when they hit a bump in the road.
    B. Offer a shoulder to cry on when the going gets tough.
    C. Point out the silver lining in difficult circumstances.
    D. Say the right thing in any situation.
  5. You are getting pizza with your extended family.  You really want anchovies, but they wrinkle their noses.  What do you do?
    A. Get your own pie and convince your fish-averse tablemates to try it.
    B. Nibble at a slice of mushroom pizza they ordered, even though you are not a mushroom fan.
    C. Order your own anchovy pizza and quietly savor every bite.
    D. Ask for a side of anchovies for your slices.
  6. You have your eye on a gorgeous necklace and you know your significant other hasn’t bought you a birthday present yet.  You…
    A. Tell what you want and exactly where to find it.
    B. Drop a hint, but then silently worry the gift will seem extravagant.
    C. Remind yourself that it’s the thought that counts an whatever he gets will be heartfelt.
    D. Ask your friend if she likes the necklace before you decide if you really want it.

Keeping Our Kids’ Immune Systems Strong

“There is only one cause of Disease…Malfunctioning Cells
There are only two causes of Malfunctioning Cells…
Exposure to Toxins & Lack of Nutrients”
~Raymond Francis “Never Be Sick Again”~

We are all concerned about Covid-19 and now, with this new different effect on children, we have added another stress to our concerns.

One topic rarely heard on all of the news programs and from our government is what we can do to create a preventive strategy by strengthening our immune systems?

What does this look like?  First, let me stress that this blog is meant to give insight into rebuilding and strengthening our immune systems, not cure or prescribe.  Imagine, however, if you knew what nutrients and other purchase choices could help build a healthy body vs. what choices could damage your body, would that make a difference for you?

Let’s take a look at our current situations:
Are your kids getting too much sugar in their diet?
1. Causes glucose levels to spike and plummet, causing mood swings, fatigue, headaches and increased cravings.
2.  Increases the risk of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.  Possible connections with cancer.
3.  Can interfere with how your body fights disease because bacteria and yeast feed on sugar anda result, their colonies grow.
4.  Can lead to chromium deficiency which helps regulate blood sugar.  90% of Americans are deficient.
5.  Increases stress by effecting hormonal responses.
6.  Causes tooth decay by fueling plaque and bacteria.
7.  Can cause gum disease which can lead to heart disease and other inflammatory concerns.
8.   Affects cognition in children (shown in tests in NYC school lunches)
from Atkins.com
B.  How much processed foods is your family eating?  The nutrient value is low and it fills up children so they don’t want other, healthier choices.

C.  How many fruits and vegetables do your kids eat a day?  What do you buy – organic vs. commercial?   Learn new healthy recipes and give fresh fruits and veggies for snacks.   Connect with me for my “Dirty Dozen and Clean 15 ” to know what to buy organic. [Or go to EWG.org]

D.  Do your children take a multi-vitamin/mineral daily?  How much sugar is in them and are they synthetic?   Make sure what you are buying is low in sugar, well researched and has purity testing.

E.  Have your children been on antibiotics or steroids?  This, as well as, stress can kill the good bacteria in your gut and create yeast overgrowth which effects children’s health and immunity.  Daily probiotics help this.

F.  How much exercise do your children get daily?

G.  How much screen time do your children use daily?  Do you have protective glasses for them (and you) from the radiation that comes off of the screens?  Do you put electronics in another room at bedtime?

H.  What does your children’s general health look like?

I.  What cleaning, laundry and dish detergents are you using?  Toxic chemicals in the home effect breathing, are absorbed by the skin and about 60% end up in the blood stream.  Choose natural non-toxic cleaners and personal care products.

With that in mind, what does it take to build a child’s immune system?
The only things that build cells are nutrients – vitamins, minerals, proteins, water, oxygen, essential fats.  The higher quality choices, the higher quality cells.  The body always chooses what is best when given the chance.  For example, if you give a dog a choice between pure water and tap water, it will instinctively go to the pure water.  Our instinctive choices (vs. our conscious choices) are the same.

Over 40% (some say much higher) of our immune system is in our gut.   Our microbiome, the trillions of microorganisms in our body, especially the intestinal tract, is made up of good and bad bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses.  When in balance, the body operates well.  When out of balance with more pathogens than helpful bacteria, our system will malfunction.

What kills those helpful bacteria?  Antibiotics, steroids and stress are the biggest culprits.  These probiotics or good bacteria need replacing daily.

Look at your child’s digestive health
Building a healthy immune system for both adults and kids means keeping the gut healthy.  I always consider, as a result, the daily addition of probiotics (the good bacteria) and using natural remedies, if possible, before considering antibiotics or steroids.  Our bodies have great natural healing abilities.  For example, when a child has a fever, it is the body using its defenses to fight off whatever the problem is.  Does that mean you don’t call a doctor when it spikes to 104 or 105 degrees?  Absolutely not!  But allowing the body to do its own work, with the help of some extra herbs or nutrients at lower levels allows the body the time to do its work.

1. Do they defecate daily?  How many times?  The purpose of this is to eliminate toxins and substances the body no longer needs.  This is critical in overall health.  If a child is not going 1-2 times daily, increase their fiber and water and make sure they are on a probiotic to help crowd out unwanted or excess yeast and bacteria.  A mild herbal laxative may also be necessary if that doesn’t work.  Talk with your doctor and ask for natural means before drugs.

2. Does your child react to certain foods that create gas and belching?  Make sure they are chewing thoroughly so food will be properly digested.  Also be sure they are drinking enough water.  Often fresh lemon squeezed into the water is helpful. See what foods they respond to poorly so you can target any sensitivities or allergies.  Sometimes digestive enzymes may be necessary as you work with changes in diet in your search for what are the best food choices.  Your pediatrician can help with this, as well.

Medicine Cabinet Nutrients
All medicines have some negative effects so striving for a natural way to build your child’s immunity is always the best first step.  Here are what I have chosen for myself and my children over the years.

1.  Vitamin C – a homeopathic MD told me years ago to have my children on 500mg a day for prevention and 1000 mg for adults.  When my 1 year old son had tonsillitis and bronchitis with 103 temperature, she had me give him chewable C at a much higher rate.  With C and a homeopathic remedy, he was fine in 24 hours.

2. Herbs – Elderberry, larch tree, echinacea, oregano oil, garlic – all are amazing in stopping or minimizing colds and flu.  With Echinacea I have been told by naturopaths that it should be used no more than  5-7 (varying opinions) days and then take a 3-5 day break.  It is not meant to be used continuously.

3. Zinc – crucial for normal development and function of immune cells.  It also contributes to stopping inflammation, a major precursor to disease.

4. Probiotics – These good bacteria help crowd out pathogens and excess yeast which can lower the immune system.  Should be taken daily.

5. Foundational nutrients – High quality protein supplements and multi vitamin/mineral

Buyer beware:
Does the company do clinical testing on their products?  Do they have peer-review published articles on their research?  Are their raw materials tests for contaminants?  Are they food based?  These are criteria for all supplements.

Eliminating Toxic Chemicals in Home Care and Personal Care Products
Over 80,000 new chemicals have been introduced in the last 50 years.
Few have been tested for toxicity.

What are the effects of these toxins have on our children?  They are lowering the immune system, effecting their lungs and potentially causing cancer.  We are breathing these products and/or absorbing them through our skin.

Here are some of the concerns:
287 Industrial Chemicals
—Found in a test of the umbilical cord blood of 10 newborns: consumer-product ingredients, banned industrial chemicals, and pesticides
1,4-Dioxane and Formaldehyde—Found in 61% of  28 children’s bath soaps, shampoos, lotions, and  other personal care products tested; considered probable carcinogens by the EPA
Phthalates—Fragrance can contain phthalates—known endocrine disrupters—which are also known to   be skin irritants with potentially negative impacts on the respiratory system, liver, and kidneys
Bisphenol-A—Found in polycarbonate plastic containers, baby bottles, and toys—is an endocrine  disrupter; newborns and infants may have up to 11X more in their bodies than adults.

In closing, I know our children are the most vulnerable because of size and that they have not fully developed.  I ask that we all consider the best choices in what foods we give them and what products we choose for our homes and personal care in order to protect our precious children (and ourselves) and help them build strong bodies and minds.

3 Simple Steps to Support Your Immune System

Yes!  Getting your immune system strong is part of today’s blog! Let’s start with those nutrients that may truly make the difference between a mild or major response to any nasty “invaders” that come your way!

I have chosen Shaklee for over 30 years because I can trust their research and quality control to ensure whatever I take from their line will be safe, absorb well and do its job.  I love the 100% guarantee if you are not satisfied too.  I know there are other quality companies out there, so choose what is best for you.

Today we need to trust what we use and eat.  Don’t be misled by slick ads.  Check with the companies to find out their research, safety tests for raw materials and peer reviewed publications.  For me, when it comes to brain surgeons, parachutes and what I put in my body, I want the best!!

STEP 1  Strengthen Your Immune System

  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Eat healthy and supplement wisely
    • Choose antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables – ex – citrus, broccoli, spinach, and mushrooms
    • Avoid sugary drinks and high-fat fast foods
    • Add supplements to give immune support and immediate help
      • Shaklee’s NutriFeron – a unique proprietary blend of plants to increase immune function – used daily to continue building a healthy, protective immune system
      • Defend & Resist – elderberry, larch tree, echinacea and zinc- add at first sign of illness  –  chew, suck on, make into tea or swallow – great for kids too
      • Immune Formula I – my favorite formula for hitting colds, viruses & flu quickly
      • Vitalized Immunity – another fast working supplement – equals equivalent of vitamin C of 16 oranges
      • Optiflora DI – Probiotics to encourage better digestive and immune health by helping a high growth of good bacteria in your gut where almost 70% of your immune system resides

If you are concerned about what you need, you may want to try the Immunity Challenge Plan that Shaklee has developed to ensure you are taking care of your health at the basic level plus given our proprietary NutriFeron to keep your immune system strong.  Feel free to connect with me for more information.

STEP 2Wash Up and Keep Clean

Of course we are limiting contact with folks who are sick. As we venture out more though, we will need to make wise choices by keeping our distances and wearing masks because we don’t really know who has been exposed and may not even know it.

Clean hands are one of the best defenses against disease so let’s also wash our hands frequently with warm, soapy water, especially after being in public places, and wash for at least 20 seconds.

I use either the Get Clean® Hand Wash Concentrate or the Meadow Blend bar that keep your hands clean and soft with a hand wash that is mild, sudsy, and moisturizing.   Why?  Our skin has a protective “acid mantle” that is a first line of defense to stop unwanted germs and bacteria into our bodies.  Did you know that most soaps are alkaline and wash away our protection?  Both of these Shaklee products are ph balanced and keep our protection.

STEP 3Clean and Disinfect Your Home

Safeguard your home and your surroundings by cleaning and disinfecting all high-touch surfaces like doorknobs, countertops, railings, handles, etc.

Are you using cleaners that are toxic and actually depressing your immune system?????  Remember that what you breath in or touches your skin goes into your into your lungs or your blood stream.  The safer your choices, the less likely you will add to the possibility of infection.

Shaklee’s Basic G is a powerful multipurpose germicide that is effective against 30 types of bacteria and 26 types of viruses, including the Covid-19.  It won’t effect your lungs and you only use 1/2 tsp to 16 oz. of water.  I have used this in bathrooms and to disinfect counters, doorknobs and other places that other people might have touched.  There are even Germ Off Wipes to take with you when you go to stores or anywhere else and want to wipe down where you want to touch.

I am here for you in this uncertain time.  I would be honored to help you choose what you need to keep you and your family optimally healthy and able to ward off assaults on our bodies.  Please feel free to contact at joan@joanlubar.com.

I wish you all an amazing healthy and joyful week!

Note:  This blog is strictly my opinion based on references from Dr. Richard Brouse, Dr. Bruce Miller, Dr. Todd Turnbull and Shaklee research plus my own life experience.  It has not been studied or approved by the FDA.

Boosting Your Immune System

In today’s world of a fast spreading, mostly unknown virus we have yet to understand and conquer with either a vaccine or a cure, our lives feel as though they are in limbo.  Many of us are mostly staying at home, trying to make the most of it.

Given the lack of testing available and the projections of many more covid19 cases, we instead have to take personal responsibility for our own health.  To me that means we need to do what is necessary to build our immune systems while following the protocol of our state.

Our bodies are amazing.  They are like a chemical factory always watching for invaders and ready to attack and destroy the enemy before it takes over.  The magnificence of its ability to care for and heal us is truly miraculous.  But why does it do its job for one person and not another?  Why does one person’s immune system seem to be strong enough to withstand almost anything while another succumbs at the first introduction of unwanted foes?

Why might we have a weakened immune system that subjects us to disease so easily?

Here are some possibilities to consider:

Excess toxic waste in our systems
Are you exposed to air pollutants both outside and in?
What products are you using to clean, do laundry, bathe and put on your skin?
Did you know you also have excess waste from body processes?
Do you live a fast paced lifestyle?
Do you have anxiety from current situations?
Is there no time for yourself?
Is your job or income almost gone?
Lack of rest
Are you getting 7-8 hours each night?
High sugar and processed food diets
What do you eat every day?  How much thought do you put into it?
Lack of exercise
Are you getting 3 to 5 times of ½ hours of exercise each week?
Low water intake
Are you are drinking at least 8 8oz. servings a day of (preferably) pure water?
Poor eating habits
How many servings of fruits and veggies (fresh) do you eat each day?
What are your protein choices?
Do you eat on the fly, go to many fast food restaurants?

Did you know that 40% of your immune system process takes place in your gut?  A clean digestive tract can save your life.  This discussion will be in a later article.

Building Your Immune System

  • Get enough sleep – 7-8 hours
  • Find an exercise you love – do it 3-4 times a week, at least 30 minutes
  • Minimize sugar, white flour and processed foods
  • Eat fresh fruits and vegetables and quality, lean meats, poultry & fish
  • Use high quality supplements to fill in the gaps
  • Use “Medicine cabinet nutrients” to build a strong immune system and at first sign of illness – I’ll post my personal favorites next week
  • Drink warm (non-alcoholic) drinks; keep warm
  • Find time to relax and destress; find fun activities
  • Meditate or pray regularly
  • And, of course, have a bit of dark chocolate daily -:)

These are just a summary of ideas.  Next week I will go more in depth into some of these.  My goal today is to start you thinking about the changes you may want to make to reduce your risk of all viruses and today, especially, the corona virus.

Do Shaklee Get Clean products work?

Do the Get Clean products work, as well as, keep the toxic chemicals away from your home?

Read Maureen’s story:

“As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve been a steady user of the distilled white vinegar/baking soda/salt/lemon approach to cleaning for many years. But I recently decided to try the new line of Get Clean household products from Shaklee.

With the arrival of the 2 boxes of Get Clean goods, I must confess, my first thoughts cast a shadow of doubt and concern:  Would all the packaging and shipping prove to be worthwhile? Were the clean, fresh impressions that I gleaned from their website an accurate depiction of the actual goods? Happily, the answers are Yes, and without a doubt  I am truly amazed by their effectiveness and eco-friendlinessGet Clean not only gets the job done — but it’s a true green find — an entire line of nontoxic cleaners that won’t pollute the air you breathe, or cause harm to Mother Earth.

The Get Clean Starter Kit contains a nifty array of practical solutions; each item packs a concentrated punch of cleaning power and each package and dispenser is attractive and well designed…

With further digging, I also discovered that Shaklee also has an impressive history. Founded in 1956 by Dr. Forrest C. Shaklee, they launched one of the first nontoxic, biodegradable cleaners in the 1960s. A decade later, one of the first biodegradable laundry detergents without phosphates, nitrates or borates was introduced, followed by one of the first official Earth Day products in 1970. And in 2000 Shaklee was the first company in the world to obtain Climate Neutral certification and totally offset its CO2 emissions, with a net zero impact on the environment.

Shaklee’s environmental stewardship and social responsibility creates an attractive business opportunity. 12,000 new entrepreneurs sign up every month. I like what they’re all about: health, harmony with nature, shared dreams, a better world, and doing it right.”
